About South Dakota State University

South Dakota State University, commonly known as simply SDSU, is the largest university in the US State of South Dakota, located in Brookings, which is a city in Brookings County, with a population of nearly 19 000 inhabitants (2000), fact which makes it the 5th largest city in the state.


South Dakota State was founded in February, 1881, under the Morrill Act, first starting as Dakota Agriculture College, which was changed in 1904 to South Dakota State College of Agricultural and Mechanic Arts, the current name of the university being adopted in 1964, to better reflect the comprehensive education offered at the institution.


According to The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, SDSU is a Research University with high research activity, the university having a special focus on academic programs such as nursing, engineering, pharmacy, agriculture and liberal arts.


To its nearly 13 000 students, SDSU offers various degrees in numerous fields of study, including master’s, bachelor’s, associate and doctoral degrees in agriculture and biological sciences, education and counseling, family and consumer services, as well as several others.


The athletic teams from SDSU are known as the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, who compete in the The Summit League Division I, the Western Wrestling Conference, the Missouri Valley Football Conference Division I FCS and the Varsity Equestrian. In 2003, the women’s basketball team has won the Division II Championship, while in 2009 the women’s basketball team has won the Summit League Championship, for the first time, playing in their first NCAA Tournament ever.


The list of notable SDSU alumni contains names such as Richard F. Kneip - former United States Ambassador to Singapore, former Governor of South Dakota, Stephen Foster Briggs - inventor of the Briggs & Stratton engine, Albert W. Schlim - founder of Oyster Point, Virginia, Mike Rounds - South Dakota governor, Theodore Schultz - winner of the 1979 Nobel Prize in Economics, as well as many other great people who have made themselves notable in various fields, after graduation.
